Free tax help options for Tyler residents
Not every tax problem needs a paid professional. These free and low-cost options are run or funded by the IRS, and knowing which one fits your situation can save time and money.
Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS)
TAS is an independent organization inside the IRS. It helps when an IRS problem is causing financial difficulty, when you have tried normal IRS channels without success, or when an IRS system or procedure is not working as it should. You start a case by contacting your local TAS office or submitting Form 911 [1].
TAS does not prepare returns or negotiate on your behalf the way a representative does, but it can push a stuck case — a levy release that has not been processed, a refund that is overdue, a hardship that has not been recognized. If a bank levy or wage levy is about to leave you unable to pay rent, that is the kind of case TAS is designed for.
Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs)
LITCs are independent organizations that receive IRS grants to represent low-income taxpayers in disputes with the IRS — audits, appeals and collection — and to help taxpayers who speak English as a second language. Representation is free or low cost [2][3].
The 2026 IRS list (Publication 4134, Rev. 1-2026) shows Texas clinics in Addison, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock and San Antonio, including Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid and the law-school clinics at Texas A&M, South Texas College of Law and Texas Tech [2]. None is listed in Tyler itself, so ask each clinic whether Smith County is in its service area; each clinic sets its own income eligibility and decides whether to accept a case [3]. Clinics often handle cases by phone and mail, so distance is less of a barrier than it looks, but expect an intake interview and a request for income documents before a clinic agrees to help.
VITA and TCE free return preparation
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program prepares returns free for people who generally make about $70,244 or less, people with disabilities and limited-English speakers; the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program focuses on people 60 and older [4]. Sites change every season, so use the IRS locator to find the closest Tyler-area site and its hours [5].
For unfiled years, VITA volunteers can usually prepare prior-year returns if you bring the income records. The IRS Get Transcript tool shows the W-2 and 1099 forms the IRS has on file for each year [6].
Who needs a paid professional instead
Free programs have limits. VITA does not represent you in collection; LITCs have income caps and waiting lists; TAS will not take over a case that is moving normally. If you have a business with payroll tax, a balance large enough for an Offer in Compromise, or a revenue officer already assigned, an independent CPA or Enrolled Agent is usually the faster route.
Local context matters for those cases. Smith County's IRS housing allowance is $1,640 a month for one person and $2,263 for four, effective June 29, 2026 [7]. In Q1 2026 the county's average weekly wage was $1,182, with health-care workers at $1,287 and food-service workers at $444 [8]. Unemployment was 4.2% in August 2026 (preliminary) [9]. A professional uses those figures to argue for what you can really pay.
Watch for scams
Real IRS help never requires gift cards or wire transfers, and no legitimate firm can promise a specific settlement before reviewing your finances. Report deceptive tax-relief advertising to the Texas Attorney General's consumer protection division [10]. Be especially careful with anyone who asks for an upfront fee before looking at your IRS transcripts, or who tells you to stop talking to the IRS without first filing a power of attorney.
If you are not sure which route fits, call. The first call is free, and you get a real professional instead of a national call center. If a free program is the better fit, you will be told so.
